Time to catch a collective breath… at least for the players and fans. A long hard day (and night) of work still continues for the Eagles coaching staff. These guys don't get to come up for air until Valentine's Day.
Now the players gather themselves and get ready for a hella week of practices, scrimmages and a pre-season game:
Saturday, Aug. 3 — OFF
Sunday, Aug. 4 — 12:30 p.m. practice — NovaCare
Monday, Aug. 5 — 12:30 p.m. practice — LINCOLN FINANCIAL FIELD
Tuesday, Aug. 6 — 12:30 p.m. practice with New England Patriots — NovaCare
Wednesday, Aug. 7 — 12:30 p.m. practice with New England Patriots — NovaCare
Thursday, Aug. 8 — 12:30 p.m. practice — NovaCare
Friday, Aug. 9 — 7:30 pm — EAGLES VS. NEW ENGLAND
For a bunch of guys trying to make this team, this will be their stretch run.
Some of the guys had good days on Friday. Yo' Momah finally made some nice plays downfield and also working the sideline against Cover 2.
Chris Polk by all accounts looked great not only running the ball but blocking, too. He's down from 230 to about 215 right now. I wonder if that's a major key—finding your ideal playing weight?
Vick had a productive practice. "He was decisive, accurate and flashing the moments of excellence that make him a potentially scary good quarterback. " — Jordan Raanan, NJ.com
Vick worked out the entire arsenal. He hit on check-downs to his running backs and tight ends. He nailed DeSean Jackson deep down the right sideline for a big gain against cornerback Eddie Whitley. He found Momah with a bullet down the seam. He even had a completion to Nick Miller that came on a nicely feathered touch pass.
Overall, Vick was 15-of-16 passing. He had 32 reps, 22 with the first team.
Brandon Boykin was reportedly making plays all over the place from his corner position.
Guys who had not-so-good days were Earl Wolff, who ran with the 1's at safety and got trucked on a running play; Felix Jones, who muffed a kick return; and Trevard Lindley, who got burned deep by Momah.
Jimmy Kempski has a more complete set of notes on Friday's practice and makes a nice little read. You can link to Kempski's notepad at http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/eagles/Eagles-training-camp-2013-Practice-notes-with-illustrations-galore.html
I thought one of the most interesting aspects of both Thursday's and Friday's practices was bringing in a set of officials to ref the action. An NFL officiating crew has given an extra ingredient of realism to not only the 11-on-11 scrimmages but also the 7-on-7 drills.
I guess we should not be surprised at how many illegal motion penalties were called on the offense. There were a lot of penalties called. The Chippah's offense has a lot of pre-snap motion. This is the time to have the penalties called, though. Get it down and get it right, fellas. There's still time.
