Salt Lake Bees
The Good: Trevor Bell (2.13) pitched a solid six innings, giving up just two runs, while striking out four. Sean O’Sullivan went seven innings (complete game) on Saturday, giving up two runs, while striking out five. Trevor Reckling notched a quality start on Friday, going six innings giving up three runs, striking out four. Hank Conger went 2-4 with a double and home run, his third of the season.
The Bad: Bourjos notched just two hits over the weekend, ultimately getting dropped in the order for Terry Evans. Francisco Rodriguez (5.19) blew Trevor Bell’s win on Sunday, giving up three runs in two innings of relief work.
The Noteworthy: The newly acquired 2B Kevin Frandsen is hitting .467 (7 for 15) in his first four games with Triple-A Salt Lake over the weekend.
Arkansas Travelers
The Good: Jordan Walden looked better after giving up nine runs in his last three relief appearances. Walden pitched two scoreless innings on Sunday, striking out three. Romine went 1-3 with a run scored on Sunday. The defensive wiz at shortstop is hitting .333 on the season and has an impressive 11/11 walks to strikeouts rate from the leadoff spot — along with four stolen bases.
The Bad: Manual Flores was shelled on Sunday, giving up eight runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. The Travelers pitching gave up 17 runs over the weekend. The offense managed to score five runs in the combined twin killing on Sunday.
The Noteworthy: The Naturals and Travelers will wrap up their rain-shortened series Monday at 11 a.m
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes
The Good: Alexi Amarista (.376), Gabe Jacobo (.282) and Roberto Lopez (.386) and all had a fantastic weekend at the plate. Amarista had six hits over the weekend, including a three-hit game on Saturday and two-hit, three RBI game on Sunday. Jacobo clubbed his third home run of the season on Friday night and then drove in four runs on Saturday after going 2-4. Roberto Lopez has raised his average to a team leading .386 with six hits over two games on Saturday and Sunday. Lopez clubbed his third home run of the season. Lopez is one RBI behind Gabe Jacobo after clubbing 12 RBI’s in his last 10 games. Matt Shoemaker went seven solid innings, striking out nine batters on Sunday to win his second game of the season.
The Bad: Ryan Chaffee’s first start of the season was pretty bad. Chaffee went just an inning and 2/3 and gave up six runs on four hits and four free passes. Will Smith (3.52) gave up five runs in six innings on Saturday.
The Noteworthy: Rancho Cucamonga (13-12) leaves the High Desert with a split of the four-game series, now just 1 ½ games behind the first-place Mavericks. The Quakes have an off day on Monday.
Cedar Rapids Kernels
The Good: As we mentioned on our community forum on Friday night, Fabio Mesa Martinez and two relievers combined to throw a no hitter. Martinez struck out nine through five scoreless, hitless innings of work. Mike Trout hit his first home run of the season over the weekend, clubbed his fourth triple, scored five runs and stole his 13th base of the season. Trout is hitting .366. Randal Grichuk is turning it around. Grichuk hit two home runs over the weekend, including driving in five.
The Bad: After his two-home run game last Thursday, Carlos Ramirez went 0-8 over the weekend to drop his batting average down to .207.
The Noteworthy: The Kernels played an early game on Monday and Mike Trout hit his second home run in as many days and Randal Grichuk just clubbed his fourth home run, third in his last three games, driving in four runs. Luis Jimenez (.293) went 3-4, hitting his 2nd triple of the season. Tyler Skaggs continues to shutdown the opposition. Skaggs pitched five scoreless innings today, lowering his ERA to 0.47.
