Interview Conducted by David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer
One of the youngest players on this year’s Orem OWLZ is pitcher Yency Almonte. Drafted in 2012, Yency turned 19 in June of this year. As a result, the Angels have been developing him slowly so as to build arm his arm strength and prepare it for a full season of work.
Yency hasn’t always been a pitcher. In fact, he switched to pitching late in his high school career when he flashed low 90s heat. The Angels saw enough in him during that brief stint to draft him in the 17th round out of high school.
This week Angels fans will be seeing a bit of Yency in the interviews. He’s bilingual, and as such, he was gracious enough to translate for some of the other players who could not speak English.
