Joe Lacob and the Golden State Warriors Almost Signed Dwight Howard

Everyone knows how hard the Warriors went after Dwight Howard in the summer. You know. I know. Andrew Bogut knows. What you might not know, however, is just how close they came to signing him. Joe Lacob talked to Same Deveney over at Sporting News and reveals that they did indeed come VERY close:

“I don’t like to focus on those who aren’t here,” Lacob told SN as part of an exclusive conversation this week. “Good luck in Houston, Mr. Howard. And I am sure he will help that team, they will be better. But we would not have gone after him if we didn’t think we had a chance or that it made sense. … We were a lot closer than people realize to perhaps that actually happening, (Howard) coming here. I think that is a testament to what is happening here. He was affected by the presentation that he saw by our ownership and our management.”

I for one am very glad that all management got was an ego boost, and not an extra ego. Their eventual signing, Andre Iguodlala, will be much more useful in the mentoring of the young wings, as pointed out by Maggie Pilloton.

I feel sorry for Dwight. He’s a different kind of personality than most pro-athletes. He doesn’t have quite the same serious demeanor like Andre, which I feel helps to protect an athlete from appearing like they don’t care or aren’t serious about their job. I think Howard is serious, he’s just made bad decisions. I really do wish him the best in Houston, but I’d take Bogut over him any day.
