The Golden State Warriors narrowed down their roster Wednesday, announcing they had waived shooting guard Cameron Jones. Jones was a member of the Warriors’ Summer League squad in Las Vegas, playing alongside Draymond Green and Kent Bazemore.

The Northern Arizona grad also spent all of last season with the team’s D-League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors, averaging 12.6 points per game to go along with 2.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists. In his time with the Warriors and their affiiates, he had proven to be a smart, efficient scorer who more times than not made the right play for the team.

Jones is an especially well-rounded scorer, shooting better than 46 percent from two-point range in the D-League across two seasons, as well better than 40 percent from three-point distance and 80 percent from the free-throw line.

Coming into camp, Jones was up against tough odds, with the Warriors already one of the league’s deepest teams in the league both at point guard and on the wing. Though he told me during training camp that he had wanted to bring that same kind of game to Oakland, there just wasn’t room for another shooting guard on the Warriors’ roster.

Coach Mark Jackson had previously stated his intent to keep everyone on the roster through China, but that doesn’t seem to have worked out. Instead, the Warriors still have 15th-man hopefuls Dewayne Dedmon, Seth Curry and Joe Alexander, though Alexander is still yet to take the court as he continues to recover from a stress reaction in his left leg.

Now, Jones will likely take a long look at his overseas options as well as the possibility of returning to Santa Cruz or another D-League team. He has decent size and a well-rounded shooting guard’s game. He could eventually latch on with another NBA team. But for the Warriors, he just wasn’t the right fit as they look to take the next step.
