In any endeavor, there’s always a debate between substance and form. For baseball, the debate is between results on the field versus executing the mechanics of the game with perfection.
Representing the substance side of the equation is Jeremy Berg. He doesn’t overpower hitters with a 90+ mph fastball. He doesn’t throw from the ideal arm angle. He’s a soft-tossing sidearm thrower who tops out in the upper 80s. Signed as a free agent (non-drafted), he has been pitching professionally with the Angels for 5 years, and has worked his way up to Triple-A. He’s overcome many odds to make it this far, and has proven himself at each level in the organization.
AngelsWin.com readers know that we believe in substance over form. Last year, we wrote that the Angels should have promoted him for a September callup to see how his stuff would play out in the Majors (you can read that article here).
The biggest barrier for Jeremy Berg getting a shot at the Major Leagues is the 40-man roster. The Angels’ 40-man roster is full, so they would have to cut someone in order to give Berg a shot. However, over the course of the season, many things can happen, and opportunities may present themselves for Berg to get a shot. Until then, look for him to continue in a setup role at Salt Lake doing what he does best: fooling batters and getting outs.
