The Golden State Warriors will implement the new Steve Kerr system at the D-League level, with the help of Santa Cruz Warriors head coach Casey Hill.
Hill, head coach of the Warriors’ D-League team in Santa Cruz, seems to be becoming an important part of the franchise’s developmental process.
Kerr explained Friday morning at the Summer League team’s shoot-around that Hill has been monumental in working with Ognjen Kuzmic and Festus Ezeli.
“Well Casey’s great. I mean, when I got to Oakland, he was the one who’d been there all month, with James (Andrisevic), his assistant, working out Kuz and Festus,” Kerr said.
Hill is now entering his second season as the Santa Cruz Warriors head coach. He took over prior to last season after spending two seasons as an assistant coach.
In his time with Santa Cruz, Hill has worked with a number of Golden State players, including Kent Bazemore and Nemanja Nedovic in addition to Ezeli and Kuzmic.
“He’s got a better understanding of the young guys than I do,” Kerr said.
Kerr hopes he and Hill can explore the use of the Santa Cruz team even further.
“The organization’s done such a good job of putting the D-League franchise in Santa Cruz,” Kerr said. “Now we’re really trying to integrate it, so both Casey and James will be part of this, obviously and training camp in the fall.”
Kerr detailed plans for easy transition for young players the Warriors might look to develop when they’re not getting minutes with the big-league squad.
“We want to have a system that’s the same so that we can have guys going back and forth with the same terminology, the same offensive sets, so that it can be relatively seamless when there’s guys going up and down,” Kerr said.
