A large part of the Golden State Warriors summer has been spent deciding whether or not to keep the second member of the #SplashBrothers, Klay Thompson, or ship him to the Minnesota Timberwolves in favor of landing one of this off-season’s prizes, Kevin Love.
By now we know that Thompson is going to remain a Warrior, as Love has been traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but for how long remains uncertain.
The Warriors have until October 31st to agree on a contract extension that could lock the sharp-shooter up for years to come.
If a deal is not reached, Thompson would become a restricted free agent at the end of this coming season.
One of USA Today’s national NBA beatwriters, Sam Amick, told LetsGoWarriors that Warriors Vice President of PR Raymond Ridder, speaking on behalf of franchise majority owner Joe Lacob, declined to follow up with Amick about Thompson’s contract situation, after answering questions by email about Thompson’s performance with USA Basketball’s Men’s National Team (#USABMNT).
However, Lacob did reference the decision to trade Monta Ellis, which was key to Thompson’s development from an early point in his career.
“We traded an excellent guard freeing up a starting spot for him and, as is known, despite many requests from other teams over the last few years, we have continued to bet on his continued development,” Lacob emailed Amick, “We are very proud that he is a Warrior and also of his major contribution on this year’s USA Basketball team. We are looking forward to a great year for Klay, the Splash Brothers and the Warriors.”
“We love Klay,” Lacob mentioned, “He is clearly an integral part of our team and our future.”
