Stephen Curry’s Turnovers Don’t Stop Him From Being Named Western Conference Player Of The Week

Today, the NBA announced that Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for games played on November 3rd through November 9th of 2014.

This comes a week after fellow #SplashBrothers backcourt teammate Klay Thompson was also given the award after averaging a league leading 29.7 points per game in the Warriors first three games.

Curry and Thompson are the first Warriors duo since Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson to take home Western Conference Player of the Week awards in the same season, and the first ever to do so back-to-back. Davis and Jackson did so in April of 2005

This Western Conference Player of the Week award is the first of Curry’s career, but he does have two Western Conference Player of the Month honors which came about a year apart in April of 2013 and 2014.

In the three games played this week, a 121-104 win against the Los Angeles Clippers, 35-10-5-4 performance in a win at the Houston Rockets, and a 107-95 loss last night to the Phoenix Suns, Curry averaged 30.0 points, 7.3 assists, and 6.0 rebounds and also led the league in steals with 3.3 per game.

Curry has now taken over his backcourt mate for the top spot among all scorers and now sits at 27.7 points per game through the first six contests. He also continues to lead the league in steals with 3.5 per game.

However, while leading the league in points and steals, Curry also leads the NBA in turnovers.

“It’s the ultimate give-and-take between the freedom to make plays and being aggressive versus — you don’t want to take that away, but you’ve got to be able to control the game by making the smart plays and not just handing it to them,” Curry told reporters after the ten turnovers in the loss to Phoenix last night, “It gave them life and easy buckets that they were struggling to find and they took advantage of them.

“I’ve done it before. Probably won’t be the last time to do it,” Curry added, “It’s definitely frustrating especially in the moment because you understand the negative effect it has on the team and us trying to win and I’m in control of that.”

On his Instagram account, Curry jokingly posted a picture of an apple turnover and wrote the caption: “Smh. It’ll change.”

The Warriors will be looking to bounce back from the disappointing loss, in which they had 26 turnovers, when they take on the defending world champs, the San Antonio Spurs back at home at Oracle Arena (#Roaracle). This will be the first match-up between these two teams this season.

The game can be seen at 7:30PM PST live on CSN Bay Area and will be live tweeted at @LetsGoWarriors.
