Staying In The Moment: Klay “Bogeys” The Walk-Away Celebration, Stephen Curry Too Unselfish?

ORACLE ARENA, OAKLAND, CA — When you pass to a wide-open Stephen Curry for an uncontested three-pointer, chances are, he’s going to make it.

Everybody knows that, so why wait until after he makes it to celebrate? That’s so 2014 — or something like that.

The best way to indulge in the triumph of a Curry triple is to do so before it happens.

Earlier this month, Andrew Bogut even went so far as to run past Curry with a premature celebration, forcing him to adjust his shot — he still made the shot, of course.

With about two-and-a-half minutes to go in the third quarter of the Golden State Warriors’ romp over the Dallas Mavericks the other night, Klay Thompson found himself in a similar situation.

Draymond Green had gotten a defensive rebound, raced up the court, found Thompson wide open on the left wing, and Klay spotted Curry even more to his left with no Maverick within eight feet of him.

Curry cocked for the shot, Thompson turned and put both hands up in celebration, but instead of doing what 20,000 fans in the building wanted him to do, Steph passed the ball back to Klay.

Luckily, Thompson managed to track down the loose ball after Curry’s pass hit his body, and his pass back to Curry during that crazy sequence ended up bouncing off a Dallas player out of bounds.

“I paused for like a half-second too long,” Curry told reporters after the game. “I thought (Thompson) was hotter than I was.”

In fact, Curry was right, although not by much. Thompson was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc up until that point, while Curry was 3-for-5.

“That’s just a good point guard,” said an apologetic Thompson. “He thought I had the hot hand.”

But Green revealed to reporters that most of it was simply, shall we say, Bogut-envy.

“Klay told Bogut that was his fault, ‘I was trying to do what you did,’” said Green.
