WARRIORS PRACTICE FACILITY, OAKLAND, CA — During Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr’s 2016 Coach Of The Year award ceremony at the Oakland Marriott Hotel last Wednesday six days ago, emcee Bob Fitzgerald revealed to the audience that Kerr coined the phrase #StrengthInNumbers, which is now being used as a fan rallying cry by the team’s marketing department.
The phrase was part of a video clip that the Golden State coaching staff put together before the start of last season, Kerr’s rookie season with the Warriors, the night before training camp.
“We kind of did some funny stuff in there and spliced in some movie footage,” Kerr told us, “but the theme of it was kind of our message for them in camp, which was we have a lot of good players. We want to play everybody and wear teams down”
What made it even more special was that Kerr got his old broadcasting partner, Marv Albert, to narrate.
Watch as Kerr gives a pretty good impression of Albert:

“I didn’t know it would catch on with our marketing department or I would have done the Pat Riley thing and (trademarked it), like the ‘Three-Peat’ and made like fourteen dollars out of it or something,” joked Kerr.
The Warriors have more prominently utilized the slogan this year, getting it printed on t-shirts given to every seat-holder at Oracle Arena during the playoffs. A search of the USPTO website has, in fact, confirmed that the Warriors trademarked the term.
“It was cool that it caught on and it may sound a little corny, but it does suit our team well,” said Kerr. “We used all fourteen of our available players in that series and we take a lot of pride in our depth.”
