From #GSWMediaDay: Kevon Looney Played 3-On-3 With Durant During The Summer, “Watched Him A Long Time” Since High School

WARRIORS PRACTICE FACILITY, OAKLAND, CA — Ballislife, a “mixtape” company known for its highlight reels of high school phenoms on the path towards the NBA, once posed the question: “Is Kevon Looney the next Kevin Durant?”

(DubNation came through once more, with @LetsGoWarriors Twitter follower @DJMacandog offering a tip to that YouTube video as Golden State Warriors Media Day — aka #GSWMediaDay — kicked off the new season. During our research, we also found another one.)

Both Looney and Durant are now forwards with the Warriors, and both are listed at 6’9″, although Durant is probably closer to 6’11”.

If a report by San Francisco Chronicle’s beatwriter Connor Letourneau stating that Looney has added twenty pounds of muscle this summer is correct, then both Looney and Durant now weigh 240 pounds.

“Yeah, I was compared when I was in high school,” Looney told LetsGoWarriors.com at Media Day. “I watched him a long time.”

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Looney averaged 27.9 points and 12.7 rebounds per game in high school.

Meanwhile, Durant averaged 23.6 points and more than 10 rebounds per game, according to MaxPreps.com.

Looney, who played in only five of the Warriors’ 82 regular season games in 2015-16, had his right hip surgically repaired in August of 2015, not long after being drafted with the 30th pick the month before, then had surgery to repair his left hip in April 2016.

But he told reporters at Media Day that he feels “close to a hundred percent” as training camp begins.

He did not play with the Warriors’ Summer League team this past July.

However, Looney did get some time on the hardwood with Durant despite missing the in-between-season “glorified scrimmages” in Las Vegas.

“I played a little bit with him this summer,” said Looney. “Some three-on-three games, and he’s a great player.”

There’s still time to fulfill Ballislife’s (suggested) prophecy.

“I look forward to learning something this year,” said Looney of Durant. “To be on the team, and see how he handles himself and carries himself…to see him up close is going to be great.”
