John Lackey was in total control against the Red Sox and Lester was matching him for the first 4 innings. The trouble began in the fifth with a leadoff double for the Angels. Scioscia opted to bunt him to third and bring up Abreu with the go-ahead run at third. Lester walked Abreu for the third time of the night and Torii Hunter made him pay with a monster 3-run shot into the rock pile setting off fireworks and frustration across Red Sox Nation.
The Red Sox brought up the tying run in the top of the 6th but couldn’t get a big hit and Lakey then resumed mowing batters down in the 7th. RR came in for Lester to pitch the 7th and promptly loaded the bases without getting an out. Tito had seen enough and brought in Saito for the high pressure situation. He got a ground ball and the Sox were able to get a double play (home to third) but then the next batter had a hit and Bay tried to get the runner at third. The ball went off of Lowell’s glove and another run scored putting the Angels up 5-0.
Oliver then shut down the Sox in the 8th and the 9th. There were two really bad calls by 1st base umpire C. B. Bucknor in the game but they did not stop the Red Sox from winning no matter how much complaining you hear on calls to WEEI.
