The key for the Red Sox to pull off a blockbuster trade is freeing up Clay Buchholz from the rotation. Right now the Sox cannot trade Buchholz without a good option to replace him and John Lackey may be that guy. Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse tweeted that the Sox are having Lackey take a physical for them, a sign of serious interest. If the Red Sox sign Lackey they could ship Buchholz off to San Diego for Adrian Gonzalez. This could be problematic though if the Lowell trade falls through. The hot stove is getting very hot with all of the Bay, Holliday, and Lowell deals all hinging on one another.
UPDATE: Alex Speier of WEEI.com has confirmed that Lackey is taking a physical for the Red Sox in Boston today. Things are starting to get interesting.
