Red Sox Set to Open Target Field

When the Red Sox take on the Twins tonight in Minneapolis they will play baseball outside for the first time in 28 years.  No more white roof to to lose balls in, no more hefty bag.  The new Target Field should be a much better viewing experience for fans.

Target Field is an intimate ballpark, coming in around 1 million square feet. It’s similar in size to AT&T ballpark in San Francisco. And its seating capacity is 39,504, which is less than the 45,423 baseball capacity (with curtains down in the outfield) at the Metrodome. But about 19,000 of Target Field’s seats are in the lower bowl.

The Red Sox get a chance to accomplish many firsts including hitting the first home run in an official game at Target Field.  Here is the pregame schedule from the Star Tribune:

MONDAY’S SCHEDULE

11:45 a.m.: Kirby Puckett statue unveiled

Noon: Gates open, batting practice

2:51 p.m.: Military flyover of F-16s

2:58 p.m.: Twins retired numbers unveiled

3:10 p.m.: “Play ball!”
