Manny Delcarmen

From 2005 to August 31st of this year, Manny Delcarmen, born and raised in Boston, wore a Red Sox uniform. I for one was not all that happy to see him go. Playing for your hometown favorite team must be one the ultimate dreams for any boy who starts to play baseball. Manny was active in his community, working with The Jimmy Fund and sponsoring bowling tournaments to raise money for local schools.

Manny made 10 appearances with the Sox in 2005, and was a fixture in the Red Sox bullpen from 2006 on, with fastballs reaching mid-’90’s. 2007 was arguably his best year as he posted a 2.05 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP in 44 innings. He was streaky after that, with the bad streaks outnumbering the good, as his numbers started going in the wrong direction to the point that the Sox traded him to the Colorado Rockies on the last day of the 2010 waiver deadline. He actually had a great 2010 season up to June 1st this year. In 26 IP, he posted a 1.78 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. For the next 2 months he was simply horrible, but stabilized himself in August, but not enough to convince the Sox to keep him. Delcarmen was traded to Colorado for minor league pitcher Chris Balcom-Miller. It was generally considered that Manny could use a change of scenery to turn himself around.

Manny’s first appearance for the Rockies was one I’m sure he’d like to forget: 0.1 IP, 4 hits, 4 runs. Jet lag? Maybe, but if you take away that 1 game, his numbers get better, but he still has not returned to his form of 2007: 3.00 ERA and a WHIP of 1.83, down from 40.00 after his 1st game with the Rox.

Here’s hoping that Manny returns to his vintage self of 2007. He’s one of the players I wouldn’t mind seeing back in a Sox uni someday.
