The Red Sox pitching staff continued to give up home runs, in fact they lead the majors in home runs allowed. The Yankees took Sox pitchers deep four times today at the Fens; Buchholz and Doubront each gave up one and Aceves gave up two. Buchholz struggled and only went 3 2/3 innings. He gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits. Doubront and Aceves continued where Buchholz left off and it wasn’t until Wakefield came in for the 8th and 9th that the Yankees stopped scoring.
Pedroia drove the Sox offense with three doubles today. Lowrie also had a good day at the plate with three hits. Aside from Pedey and Lowrie the rest of the team seemed to be mired in a slump and could only account for a combined 4 hits.
The loss leaves the Red Sox with a record of 1-7 on the season. The rubber match of the series is tomorrow night and will be broadcast on ESPN.
