Clay Buchholz had a task in front of them…beating the unbeatable Jered Weaver. He was 6-0 with an 0.99 ERA. With a lot of help from the offense and some great defense behind him, Clay got it done. Clay pitched 6.2 innings allowing 2 runs to score. He really gutted through and left the game with a slim 3-2 lead.
The Red Sox bats came to play today. They not only got Weaver to give up some runs, but they also made him work way hard…getting his pitch count up early. Pedroia had an epic at bat with Weaver in the 5th…a 12 pitch at bat which ended with a 2 RBI hit right up the middle. That at bat was a game changer. Pedey just fouled off pitch after pitch until Weaver finally pitched him something to hit.
And then the Sox got a hold of the Angels bullpen. Gonzo hit a bases clearing wall ball double and it was followed by a Papi HR. The Sox put 6 runs on the board in the 7th inning to put the game on ice. The Angels were able to get 3 runs off Dan Wheeler, but Oki came in and put the game away.
All in all…a great game, a great win.
