Lackey Gets 3rd Straight Win Behind Red Sox Bats!

The Red Sox welcomed the Milwaukee Brewers to Fenway to start off a long stretch of interleague play.  John Lackey was taking the mound for the Sox while the former Blue Jays Marcum was taking the mound for the Brewers.  John Lackey had a shaky start in his first few innings…giving up 4 runs in his first 3 innings, however after that he settled in and basically just dominated the Brewers lineup.  A lineup that included hitters like Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun.  Lackey initially didn’t look like he was going to be long for the game, but in the end his pitching line was 111 pitches, 8 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 0 BB and 5 Ks.  Sure, it’s not technically a quality start, but it sure seemed quality to me.  Matt Albers followed Lackey to close out the 9th.  It was nice to have a game when we didn’t need Papelbon anyways while he is serving his suspension.

As for the Sox batters, they also had it going on.  For a game where we lost both Crawford and Youkilis, you’d think the bats would be hurting.  Crawford left in the 1st with a hamstring injury after running out a close play at first base.  Youkilis left the game in the 5th with what was deemed a stomach illness.  The Sox got on the board quickly with a solo HR from Ells in the 1st.  Gonzo singled and then Papi drove him in with a RBI double.  Just like that the score was tied 2-2.  Shaun Marcum was out of the game after the 1st with an apparent injury and the Sox had a chance to get all over the Brewers bullpen.  The Sox scored 2 more runs in on a 2 run RBI single from Youk.  Unfortunately the Brewers re-tied the game in the top of the 3rd to have the score 4-4.  However, after that the game was all about the Sox bats and Lackey’s spectacular pitching.

In the bottom of the 5th, Adrian Gonzalez hit a solo HR to give the Sox a 5-4 lead.  In the 6th, Jason Varitek hit an “almost HR” that ended up being an RBI double.  Pedey followed that up with a single to give the Sox a 7-4 lead.  In the 7th, Darnell McDonald who was in the game for the injured Crawford got an RBI with a Brewers throwing error.  JD Drew followed with a 2 RBI single to give the Sox a 10-4 lead.

All in all…a game that started off looking like it was going to be a rough night and turned quite a nice nice win!
