Aceves Walks Padres To Victory

I went to Fenway yesterday hoping to see Josh Beckett pitch.  Unfortunately, an hour before leaving the house I heard that Joshie Beckett tummy had other ideas and he was scratched with “intestinal distress” and Alfredo Aceves would be starting in his place.  Aceves had been great for the Sox so far in whatever role they have needed for him, but last night would not be the case.  Aceves was not sharp and in the 2nd inning he just completely lost the strike zone and issued FIVE walks in a row allowing 2 runs to score.  The only positive for Aceves is that he did seem to settled down a little bit and Tito didn’t need to go to the bullpen in the 3rd inning.  Michael Bowden got warmed up a bunch of times when it looked like Aceves might be heading for trouble, but he seemed to always get out of it and keep on pitching.  Aceves pitched 5 IP, 99 pitched, 4 H, 4 R, 6 BB, 4 Ks.  The Sox did tie the game with a Gonzo RBI in the 6th, but that was short lived when Wheeler struggled in the 6th and left with runners at 2nd and 3rd and only one out.  Bard came into the game and got what looked like a ground ball, but Gonzo bobbled the ball and a run scored.  And the Sox continued to have opportunities to score, but just couldn’t get the run to score home plate.  Papelbon came out to pitch a 1-2-3 9th, however the Sox didn’t have a walk-off rally in their bones when Papi hit into a double play and Drew struck out.
