Wake Gets 2000th K with Sox in WIN!

Tim Wakefield not only got the win, but also got his 2000th career strikeout with the Red Sox in last night’s game.  Wake pitched into the 7th inning and even though he gave up a grand slam before leaving the game, he showed once again why he has been such a valuable member of the Red Sox for so long.

Wake got into a wee bit of trouble early giving a 2 run HR in the 1st to Miguel Olivo.  However, the Sox didn’t wait until the 7th inning to give Wake some run support in scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st.  Ellsbury started the day off with a double and Gonzo knocked him in.  Youk followed that up with a 2 run HR and then Salty finished off the inning with a 2 run RBI single.  Wake gave up another run in the top of the 5th, but once again the Sox bats had his back in the bottom of the inning.  The Sox ran Pineda from the game and then got to work on the Mariners bullpen.  The Sox had the bases loaded with one out.  Crawford, who has been on quite a hitting roll since coming off the DL, hit a 2 RBI single and was followed by the red hot Josh Reddick with an RBI double.  Salty once again finished off the scoring in the inning with a 2 RBI single to give the Sox a 10-3 lead.  The Sox added another run in the 8th with a Gonzo RBI single.

Wake got chased in the top of the 7th after loading the bases and giving up a grand slam to Brendan Ryan.  It says something about Tim Wakefield and just how special he is that when he is taken off the mound after giving up a grand slam, he gets a well deserved standing ovation and tips his cap to the crowd.  Aceves came in to the game in relief and pitched 2.2 innings only giving up one run.

Ellsbury went 2 for 5 on the night, Crawford went 3 for 4, Reddick went 2 for 5, Saltalamacchia went 3 for 4 and Gonzalez went 3 for 5 on the night.  Wowza.  Nice win boys!

And yes, the Mariners have now lost 15 straight games.  They now head to NY, so let’s hope they break their epic losing streak and beat those Yankees!
