Sox Lose to Yanks, WC Lead Dwindling

The Red Sox had the best shot out of any of the games against NY this weekend on Saturday afternoon with Jon Lester on the mound vs. Freddy Garcia.  Unfortunately, Lester continued his most recent skid and wasn’t able to get out of the 3rd inning.  He wasn’t pitching well and there was some not so great defense behind him.

In the 2nd inning is where Lester found all his trouble.  Cano got a single, Swisher walked and then Andruw Jones reached on what was scored a hit, but should have been an error on Aviles for not covering 3rd.  Next Lester gave up a single to Montero for the Yanks to lead 1-0.  What followed next was also scored a hit, but I would have scored it a hit on Crawford.  Crawford made a sliding attempt at a catch on a Martin hit and he couldn’t make the play.  That was followed by a 3 run HR by Derek Jeter.  Yanks lead 6-0.

In the 3rd, Lester gave up a double to Montero to have the Yanks leading 8-0.  The night was over for Lester.  Atchison was in the game and finished off the inning without allowing any runs to score.  Atchy also pitched a scoreless 4th and 5th inning.  Nice outing from him.  In the 6th, Junichi Tazawa took the mound and gave a solo HR to Jesus Montero.  Sox lead 9-0.

In the 7th, the Sox actually scored a run.  Conor Jackson got a single and scored on a Crawford RBI double.  That is all the Sox could get across the plate.  Michael Bowden came in for the Sox and closed the game out.

The even worse news is that both the Rays and the Angels won last night.  The WC lead is a slim 1.5 games.
