The news broke through twitter (isn’t that where all news breaks these days?) that David Ortiz has won the Roberto Clemente Award this year. Congrats Papi! The award recognizes a player who has a positive influence both on and off the field. It is named after former MLB great Roberto Clemente who passed away in a plane crash while trying to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in need. A Sox player has won this award two years in a row since the winner last year was Tim Wakefield.
Ortiz is incredibly involved in his charity the David Ortiz Children’s Fund which raises fund to help children access critical medical care both in his homeland in the Dominican and here in New England.
Congrats Papi! Well deserved! It’s great to get some good and positive news about the Sox and this definitely fits the bill.
