Yoenis Cespedes defected from Cuba this summer and could be an MLB free agent in a few weeks. Ben Cherington and Red Sox scouts are going to take a look at him this weekend in a workout in the Domincan Republic. Cespedes is a right-handed power hitting outfielder who hit 33 homers in 90 games last year in Cuba. He is getting attention from many teams including the Cubs, Marlins and Nationals.
Earlier in the week Peter Gammons had this to say about Cespedes:
“This dude is real — very real. He’s 26 years old with a 37-inch vertical and a 6.35 time in the 60-yard dash, ungodly power and the focus of about two dozen Major League teams.”
This slightly insane promotional video below gives you some insight into the world of Cespedes….maybe a little too much insight.
