By offering salary arbitration to David Ortiz, the Red Sox will likely have to pay $12 million for a one year deal if Papi accepts. If Ortiz decides to go elsewhere the Red Sox will get draft picks because he is a Type A free agent.
The Red Sox also offered arbitration to Dan Wheeler but declined it for Jason Varitek, J.D. Drew, and Tim Wakefield.
