The Boston Red Sox have traded Marco Scutaro to the Colorado Rockies for pitcher Clayton Mortensen. The move frees up $6 million in salary and will allow the Sox to add another quality starter to the rotation via the free agent market. The obvious target for this would be free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt if an acceptable deal can be worked out.
The trade also means the Red Sox will go in a new direction at short because Lowrie and Scutaro will be on new teams for 2012. Jose Iglesias will be the likely starter at shortstop and will be a defensive upgrade for the team. Iglesias’ offense needs work and he will have to be more selective at the plate. Fans will need to patient with him as he develops on the job much like Pedroia did during his rookie season.
