Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey will miss the start of the season and could end up on the DL. Bailey is in Boston to have his sore thumb examined. The team will likey go with a closer by committee to start the season with Aceves and Melancon should see most of the save opportunities.
Josh Beckett is also having an issue with his thumb and will have be examined in San Antonio, Texas. If Beckett heads to the DL the Red Sox may opt ot put Aceves into the rotation temporarily. Beckett is scheduled to start against the Tigers on Saturday. Bobby Valentine does not think the injury will lead to any missed starts and that the examination is just for peace of mind.
