<![CDATA[The Los Angeles Rams earlier this week signed a former BCS quarterback in hopes of creating competition with their 2016 rookie.
No, not that rookie.
The Rams inked former Utah quarterback Travis Wilson; but he is coming to the team as a tight end, according to the Salt Lake Tribune (h/t RamsWire).
So rather than sharing the position group meeting room with second-year quarterback Jared Goff, Wilson will join second-year tight end Tyler Higbee.
Wilson was a senior for Utah in 2015, helping lead the Utes to back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2014 and 2015. He played all four years for the Utes, throwing for 7,401 yards and 54 touchdowns over his career.
The 6-foot-7 Wilson also ran the ball 400 times for 1,221 career yards and 21 TDs. The Tribune reported that he has put on 20 pounds and weighs about 250 pounds.
“At the end of the day, I’m a football player,” Wilson told ESPN.com last month prior to his signing with the Rams. “I grew up playing linebacker and quarterback. But even early on in high school I played a little wide receiver. If that coach thinks a position change would be the best fit for me and the team, I’m all for that. I wouldn’t mind switching positions at all. My biggest goal is to help a team get better. If that means doing things differently, I’m all for it.”
His college coach, the Utes’ Kyle Whittingham, said to ESPN.com that he thought the position change was an intriguing possibility for Wilson.
“Obviously we only had experience with him as a quarterback and that’s all he ever played for us,” Whittingham said. “He won a lot of games for us. But that’s a good question, where he fits in at the next level? There are probably a couple of places that would be possibilities outside of quarterback. He’s got the big frame. He’s got great hands. He can catch very well. That’s interesting if someone can put 10-20 pounds on his frame and make him a tight end.”
Rams fans should be encouraged that the team is open to exploring ways to add talent in the face of lacking a first-round draft pick in 2017.]]>
