Rams Offseason: Jared Goff Says ‘We’re Closer Than People May Think’

Jared Goff enters his second Los Angeles Rams offseason of his NFL career professing to have a lot more confidence.

Goff briefly addressed the media during the first day of the Rams offseason program and talked about the differences he sees from his rookie season as he prepares for his second year with the Rams and first as the team’s unquestioned starting quarterback.

“I’ll speak for the whole team; I think we’re a lot closer to where we want to be than people may think, Goff said during his media session. “We’ve got the players; we’ve got the talent. We’ve got all the pieces we need, really. It’s just about putting it together now, and the coaches and the system we’re going to run (are) going to be the glue for everything we need.

“Like I said, I think we’re a lot closer than people may think.”

The Rams quarterback, who lost all seven of his starts as a rookie in 2016, took part in a quarterback camp at the 3DQB quarterback training facility with coaches Tom House and Adam Dedeaux.

“Went down there and did a lot of work with them, and came back and felt like I came away a much better player,” said Goff, who threw for 1,089 yards completed just 54.7 percent of his passes and had five touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2016. “The way they explained things made so much sense. … There’s just so much that goes on with a throw that you really didn’t know until you go down there and experience it and go through it. And now you know when you do make a bad throw—you want to limit them—but when you do, you know why. It’s not just, ‘Oh, that was a bad one’ and move on. You know why and how to fix it.”

Goff added that his comfort level entering the Rams offseason far exceeds what it was his rookie year because of his familiarity with the Rams, their facilities and his teammates, and he hopes that makes him a better leader in 2017.

Much of Goff’s sessions were generalities, including his observations on new coach Sean McVay’s offense.

“Good feel,” he said. “From what I know and what I’ve seen, it’s obviously a great offense and from what I’ve heard, I’ve talked to quarterbacks around the league and coaches and whatnot and I haven’t heard a bad word about it, so I’m excited for it.”
