The Red Sox were able to rally in the late innings and grab a win against the Blue Jays and their bullpen arms. Dice-K took the mound for the Sox and while he did not get the win AGAIN, he did pitch quite well. Dice-K only allowed one run and kept the Sox in the game.
Dice-K is still looking for the elusive first win since he returned to the Sox from Tommy John surgery. In his previous outings, he’s usually had one really bad outing. He didn’t have a bad outing last night, however he still left the game in the 6th in line for a loss because of no run support. Dice-K gave up a single run in the 1st inning while he only gave up one hit due to some poor defense behind him. Dice-K gave up a leadoff double to Lawrie and then Rasmus reached when Aviles fielded the ball and went to 3rd to hope to get Lawrie and didn’t make a great throw so Lawrie was safe. Dice-K had runners on the corners and no outs. Dice-K got Bautista to pop out. Then the only run scored when Encarnacion hit a ball to third base and Middlebrooks mishandled the ball and threw it over Gonzo’s head. Run scored. Sox 0-1. Dice-K got Escobar to line out and the inning that could have been a lot worse was over. That would be it for Dice-K in terms of damage. He ended up striking out 5 and only walking one. All in all, a pretty good outing. Dice-K was pulled with 2 outs in the 6th inning and Scott Atchison came out in relief.
Unfortunately for Dice-K when he left the game he was still in line for a loss since he got zero run support. The Sox weren’t able to get anything going against the Jays until the late innings. In the 6th we thought a run was going to score when Papi hit a wall ball double and Pedey was headed to the plate, however Davis made a great throw and Pedey was tagged out. However, in the 7th the Sox would actually break the scoreboard. With 2 outs, Salty hit his 14th HR of the season to tie the game 1-1. Kalish hit a pinch hit double, Nava was hit by a pitch and then Aviles walked. Pedey came to the plate and hit a 2 run RBI single to give the Sox their first lead of the day. Sox 3-1. In the 8th, the Sox would add two more runs to put the game away. Gonzo hit an RBI double to score Papi. Sox 4-1. The final run was scored by a sac fly by Will Middlebrooks. Sox 5-1.
The Sox bullpen kept the game right where it was once Dice-K was out of the game as well. Scott Atchison got the final out in the 6th inning and then got 2 outs in the 7th before he was pulled in favor of Andrew Miller. Miller got the final out of the 7th. Vicente Padilla pitched his usual 1-2-3 8th inning and handed the ball over to Alfredo Aceves in the 9th. It wasn’t a save opportunity for Aceves, however he still shut the door with a quick 1-2-3 inning.
