Clay Shows Ace Form in Complete Game Win!

The Red Sox had lost 3 games in a row and needed a great outing from Clay Buchholz more than ever.  Buchholz did just that and once again looked like he might actually be the ace of the rotation.  Buchholz not only pitched well, he pitched a complete two hit game in the win over the Tribe.

Buchholz gave up a run early when he gave up a solo HR to Asdrubal Cabrera in the 2nd inning.  Sox 0-1.  Buchholz just kept cruising along until the Sox were able to tie the game up 1-1 with a Pedey RBI in the 4th inning.  Sox 1-1.  With the game tied, Clay just kept cruising along.  In the 6th, the Sox would give him a lead with Cody Ross’ 18th homerun of the season.  Sox 3-1.  In the bottom of the 6th, the Indians were able to get another run across the board due to some poor defense behind Buchholz.  Donald reached on a fielding error by Pedroia and then was able to advance to 3rd on a throwing error from Mike Aviles.  That’s some bad luck right there.  Donald came home on a Carrera sac fly to cut the lead to 3-2.  However, Buchholz beared right down and got the final two outs to get out of the inning.  That was great to see since in the past Clay has at times let a series or error or bad luck plays get into his head and let the inning get out of control.  Buchholz had a low pitch count and just kept cruising through the game.  He had himself 1-2-3 innings in the 7th, 8th, and 9th.  Aceves was up and ready in the bullpen, however thankfully we did not need him.

It was a great win by great pitching.  However, the low note of the game is when Will Middlebrooks left the game in the top of the 9th.  Middlebrooks left the game when he was hit by a pitch right on the wrist by Rogers.  It looked bad.  It sounded bad.  Middlebrooks went for XRays after the game and it looks like his wrist is broken and he will be out for the rest of the season.  That is not the news the Sox needed to hear.  Pedro Ciriaco better keep up his season of destiny since I imagine he’ll be playing a lot of short stop while Aviles gets shifted over to third base.  Ugh with a side of ugh.
