Sox Score 13 Runs and Still Lose

The Red Sox just got swept by the Angels and on a game where they scored 13 runs.  If this wasn’t the game to highlight that pitching, pitching, pitching is the problem then I don’t know what is.  Last night had to be one of the worst losses of the season, however they have been many.

Franklin Morales took the mound and had struggles early.  Morales got an early 6-0 lead when CJ Wilson struggled out of the gate, however he would be unable to protect it.  Morales didn’t make it out of the 3rd inning and was replaced by Clayton Mortensen.  Morty would not be able to get the out either and ended up giving the lead to the Halos.  Mortensen gave up a walk and then 2 RBI singles.  By the time Tazawa took the mound in the 3rd, the Sox went from having a 6-0 lead to being down 6-8.  Tazawa finally got that final out and the inning of dread was over.

Tazawa pitched a scoreless 4th and Mark Melancon pitched a scoreless 5th inning.  All the while, CJ Wilson seemed to settle in when his team gave him a lead.  In the 5th, the Sox got one of those runs back when Cody Ross hit an RBI single.  Sox 7-8.  In the 6th CJ Wilson was out of the game and that is just what the Sox needed.  Mike Aviles hit a solo HR to tie the game 8-8.  Ciriaco hit a double and then Ellsbury got him home with an RBI double of his own.  Sox 9-8.  Unfortunately, the Halos would turn right around and tie up the game in the 7th when Bailey took the mound.  Bailey gave up two singles to start the inning.  Bailey battled back to get 2 outs, but then gave up the game tying RBI to rookie phenom Trout.  Sox 9-9.

Padilla came out to finish the 7th and pitched himself a scoreless 8th inning.  In the top of the 9th, the Sox once again went ahead.  The Sox scored two runs with RBI singles from Ellsbury and Pedroia.  Sox 11-9.  That should be enough for Aceves, however it was not.  Aceves gave up a solo HR to Vernon Wells…well kind of.  The play looked like it hit off the top of the wall and therefore might not have been a HR.  However, the Sox did not ask for a review.  Aceves ended up giving the lead right back to the Halos with an RBI single to Hunter to tie the game and then an RBI single to Trumbo.  I feel that the Hunter single should have been caught by Cody Ross, but well…it wasn’t.  Sox 11-12.  No matter what Aceves allowed 3 runs to score and that is just unacceptable.  The Sox had one small battle left in them in the bottom of the 9th when Cody Ross hit a solo HR to tie the game 12-12.  Aceves came back out in the top of the 10th and continued right where he left off.  Aceves gave up a solo HR to Kendrys Morales to give the lead right back.  Bobby V finally went out to get Aceves and Breslow was in the game.  Breslow gave up an RBI single to Wells to put a nail in the coffin.  The Sox scored a single run in the bottom of the 10th, but were unable to keep this game going.  Pedey hit an RBI single to score Ciriaco.  The game ended with Gonzo striking out and the Sox losing when they were able to put 13 runs on the scoreboard.

You know it’s not a good day when your two closers, Alfredo Aceves and Andrew Bailey, both blew saves in the game.  Ugh with a side of ugh.
