Ellsbury Walks Off on the Yanks!

The Sox took to the role of playing spoiler last night when facing off against the Yankees.  The Sox and birthday boy Jacoby Ellsbury ended up walking off on the Yanks and helping the Orioles become once again tied for the lead in the AL East.

Jon Lester took the mound for the Sox in last night’s game.  He continued the trend of Sox pitchers struggling and giving up at least a run in the 1st inning.  Lester walked Jeter, gave up a double to Swisher and then an RBI groundout to Cano.  Sox 0-1.  However in the bottom of the 3rd, the Sox would get going and grab the lead.  Ciriaco aka the Yankee killer hit a double and was brought home with an Ellsbury RBI single.  Sox 1-1.  Then Pedey hit a single to score Ellsbury.  Sox 2-1.  Lester kept that lead until the 6th inning when he hit a wee bit of a wall.  Lester gave up a 2 run RBI double to Jeter to give the lead back to the Yanks.  Sox 2-3.   Lester was done for the night and would be in line for the loss if the Sox didn’t get a rally going.   Lester’s line for the night was 102 pitches, 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 7 BB and 5 Ks.  Lester is lucky with how many walks he pitched that the Yankees didn’t get to him more than they did.  Junichi Tazawa came out in relief of Lester and got two strikeouts to end the inning.

It wouldn’t be long before the game was tied once again.  Dustin Pedroia hit a leadoff HR to have the Sox tied 3-3.  Tazawa pitched himself a scorless 7th inning.  He’s continuing to show what value he has to the team.  In the bottom of the 7th, the Sox had a chance to take the lead with the bases loaded and one out.  However, Joba Chamberlain ended up getting the outs he needed and not allowing the Sox to score.  Breslow pitched a scoreless 8th for the Sox and then Bailey pitched himself a scoreless 9th inning.  The Sox bats took to the bottom of the 9th hoping to end this game.  David Robertson was on the mound for the Yankees for his 2nd inning and the Sox finally got to him.  Pedro Ciriaco and Mike Aviles both hit singles and then Jacoby Ellsbury hit a walk off single to win the game.

Anytime you can beat the Yankees it is a great thing, but a walkoff win is an extra special amazing way to win.  Nice job boys!
