The Red Sox weren’t able to have another dramatic win over the Yankees in the 9th. This time they rallied, but came up just a wee bit short. The Yanks were able to win behind hitting the long ball to tie the series 1-1.
Aaron Cook took the mound for the Sox and looked good for a couple of innings, but once the Yankees went through the order a second time he got real hittable. In the 4th, Cook gave up a lead off HR to Granderson, a single to ARod and then a 2 run HR to Cano. Sox 0-3. The Sox were able to get a run back in the bottom of the 4th with an RBI single from Loney to score Pedroia. In the 5th, Salty hit a leadoff triple however no one was able to get him home. In the 6th, Aaron Cook gave up a leadoff double to Swisher and he was done for the night. Cook’s line for the night was 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 BB and 2 Ks. It wasn’t horrific, but it just wasn’t good enough.
Rich Hill took the mound and got two outs before he was replaced by Alfredo Aceves. Aceves got the 3rd out to end the inning. In the top of the 7th, Dustin Pedroia left the game not because of injury, but because his wife just went into labor. Congrats to the Pedroia family! Alfredo Aceves continued his season of struggle on the mound when he gave up a single to Jeter and then a 2 run HR to Granderson. Sox 1-5. Ugh. Aceves got two outs, but then gave up a double to Swisher. Bobby V came out to get Aceves and things got a tad bit weird. Aceves gave Bobby V the ball, but ended up showing him up by walking away from him and almost going to the lip of the outfield before going to the dugout. Instead of Manny Being Manny it has become Aceves being Aceves. Chris Carpenter was in the game and got the final out of the inning. In the bottom of the 7th the Sox got those two runs right back. Gomez hit an RBI groundout to score Salty and Aviles hit an RBI double to score Nava. Sox 3-5. Carpenter came back out and pitched himself a scoreless 8th.
In the 8th, the Sox ended up having a bunch of people ejected. Cody Ross was ejected for complaining about a called strike and then yelling at the home plate ump. Bobby V was barking at the home plate ump from the dugout and he was ejected as well. We learned later in the 9th inning that Jerry Royster was ejected as well. In the 9th, Bogar ended up being the acting manager and the acting 3B coach. Ahh…good times. Andrew Miller took the mound in the 9th. He made a throwing error to let ARod reach, but it didn’t hurt the Sox. Miller got 2 outs and then Padilla came out to get the 3rd out. In the bottom of the 9th, Salty hit a lead off HR to bring the team within a run. Sox 4-5. Salty hit a triple, double and a HR last night, so I’d say he had himself a great night at the plate. Unfortunately that is where the rally would end and the Sox would fall to the Yanks.
The good news in the “playing spoiler” report is that the O’s rallied back to walk off on the Rays, so the Yanks are still tied for 1st in the AL East.
Red Sox 4 Yankees 5 BOXSCORE
