The Sox came into this game looking for a win to have the series in hand. The Sox lead most of the way, but everything fell apart in the 9th and would end up losing in extras. Dempster had himself a nice start, but would once again not be rewarded for it.
The Sox scored a run in the first when Ellsbury stole third and Iannetta threw the ball into the outfield and Ellsbury was able to come on home. Sox 1-0. The Sox got their 2nd run when Brock Holt hit a sac fly to score Nava. Holt was just called up and this was his first RBI with the Red Sox. Sox 2-0. In the bottom of the 2nd the Angels were able to get 2 runs to tie the game when Kendrick hit a leadoff HR and then Iannetta hit an RBI single to score Aybar. Sox 2-2. In the 3rd the Angels took a quick lead when Mike Trout hit a leadoff HR, but that lead would not last for long. The Sox grabbed the lead back when Salty hit a 2 RBI double and then Iggy hit an RBI single. Sox 5-3. The Sox added another run in the 6th when Pedey hit an RBI single. Sox 6-3.
Dempster pitched into the 7th inning and looked like he was going to cruise to a win, however the bullpen would end up not backing him up. Dempster's line for the night was 103 pitches, 6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB and 4 Ks. Andrew Miller came into the game and unfortunately would leave in the 7th with injury. Miller gave up a single to Shuck and Miller ended up falling and injuring his left foot. It didn't look good as Miller didn't get up and had to be helped off the field. I don't know how serious it is, but it for sure looked like a DL stint. Andrew Bailey came out in the 7th with 2 men on and 1 out. Bailey got out of the inning with one pitch when he got Trout to ground into a double play. Sox added a run in the 8th when Nava hit an RBI double. Sox 7-3. Andrew Bailey had another positive outing and pitched a scoreless 8th inning.
This game looked well into hand, but the 9th would prove to be a problem for the Sox. Alex Wilson came on for the 9th and definitely struggled. Wilson ended up getting two outs, but also loading the bases. Farrell had to go to Uehara for the save situation. Uehara gave up a 2 RBI single to Pujols and then an RBI single to Hamilton. Sox 7-6. The game should have been over when Uehara got Kendrick to ground into what should have been the final out, but Snyder air mailed the ball over Pedey's head. Game tied 7-7. The game was on to extras. Breslow pitched a scoreless 10th, but he wouldn't be so lucky in the 11th. Breslow gave up a single to Hawpe and then Josh Hamilton ended the game when he hit a 2 run HR to right. Game over. Sox lose 9-7. That's a frustrating loss since there aren't many times you enter the 9th with a 4 run lead and end up with a loss.
Red Sox 9 Angels 7 BOXSCORE
WP: De La Rosa (4-1) LP: Breslow (2-2)
