The Sox won the first game from the Yankees, but wouldn't have the same luck in the second. The Sox were sending John Lackey to the mound vs. Hiroki Kuroda from the Yankees. Lackey has been the most consistent pitcher for the Sox and he would pitch another strong outing, but would end up walking away with a loss.
The game would stay locked 0-0 until the 5th inning. In the first the Sox had a chance to score, but due to some bad base running by Nava he was thrown out at home. The Yanks striked first in the 5th when they scored a single run off Lackey when Gardner hit an RBI single to score Cruz. Sox 0-1. Lackey gave up his second run in the 7th when he gave up an RBI to Cruz. Sox 0-2. At this point Lackey had pitched well, but he got no run support. With two batters on in the 7th Lackey was done for the night and Thorton was in the game. Thorton allowed both of his inherited runs to score which turned Lackey's outing from stellar to just decent. Thorton allowed RBI singles to both Cano and Overbay. Sox 0-4. Lackey's pitching line for the night was 97 pitches, 6.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 0 BB and 7 Ks.
The Sox offense finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 7th. Jonny Gomes hit a sac fly to score Papi and then Carp came around to score on a Kuroda wild pitch. Sox 2-4. Unfortunately that would be all the offense they could muster against Kuroda and the bullpen. Robertson pitched a scoreless 8th and then they even got another insurance run when newly called up Drake Britton gave up a sac fly to Cano to score Cruz. Mariano Rivera came out and pitched a scoreless 9th to get his 31st save of the season.
Red Sox 2 Yankees 5 BOXSCORE
WP: Kuroda (9-6) LP: Lackey (7-7) SV: Rivera (31)
