The Red Sox came home to Fenway after a west coast road trip to face with Orioles with Felix Doubront on the mound. The O's have always given the Sox trouble, so they hoped to start the series off with a win. Doubront pitched well and got bunches of run support on way to his 10th win of the season.
The Sox got on the scoreboard in the 1st inning when Papi hit a sac fly to score Victorino. In the 3rd inning the Os were able to rally to get a lead, but it would not last for long. The O's tied the game when Doubront walked a run in and then took the lead when Machado hit a sac fly. Doubront got out of the inning with minimal damage and then the Sox bats got back to work. In the bottom of the 3rd, Shane Victorino hit a 2 run HR to have the Sox back on top 3-2. In the 4th the Sox blew this game wide open when Napoli hit a solo HR, Pedey hit a 2 RBI ground rule double and then Gomes hit a 2 RBI double. Sox 8-2. In the 5th, Victorino hit his 2nd HR of the night to have the Sox leading 11-2. The offense was definitely on fire last night.
All while the offense kept pummeling away on O's pitching, Felix Doubront was pitching himself quite an outing. Doubront pitched into the 7th inning and was easily in line for the win. Doubront got 2 outs in the 7th when Farrell went out to get him and put Thornton in the game. Doubront's pitching line for the night was 111 pitches, 6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB and 7 Ks. Thornton got the 3rd out and the were out of the inning. In the bottom of the 7th Shane Victorino continued to have the best offensive night of his career. Victorino hit a 2 RBI double to have the Sox leading 13-2. Victorino went 3 for 3 with a walk and 7 RBIs on the night. Drake Britton pitched 2 scoreless innings to close the game out and bring the Sox the first game of the series.
