Lackey Pitches and the Sox Offense Once Again Disappears

The Red Sox finished up a sweep of the White Sox, but then turned around and had to face the menacing Detroit Tigers.  John Lackey was on the mound verses Doug Fister.  Lackey pitched well, but once again got no run support from the Sox offense.   The game also had the first return of Jose Iglesias since he was traded for Jake Peavy.

Lackey took the mound and was able to go toe to toe with Doug Fister for much of the game.  The game stayed scoreless until the 7th inning when the Tigers were finally able to break the scoreboard.  Dirks hit an RBI triple to score the Tigers first run.  The Tigers were able to get a second run when Kelly hit into a double play, but Dirks was able to score from 3rd.  Sox 0-2.  Lackey has had some seroius back luck when it comes to getting any run support during his starts.  Lackey took the mound in the 8th inning, but when he allowed 2 singles Farrell came out to get him.  Lackey had another quality start, but would seem to be getting a loss for all his effort.  Matt Thornton came into the game to finish the inning.  Prince Fielder hit a sac fly to give the Tigers their 3rd run of the game and to close the book on Lackey's outing.  Lackey's pitching line was 111 pitches, 7.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB and 5 Ks.  Thornton pitched a scoreless 9th, but the offense was not able to do anything against the Tigers pitching and dropped the first game of the series.
