The Red Sox suffered a well pitched loss on Monday due to no run support, but on Tuesday they would not suffer the same fate. Jon Lester was facing Max Scherzer in an outing that was billed as a "Battle of the Aces." Other these games don't live up to the hype, but this one sure did. Both pitchers put on a show and the Sox offense got a timely hit for the victory.
Jon Lester might have had his best pitching performance of the year last night. Lester was up against a guy who is probably going to be the AL Cy Young winner and had to have another great performance to even have a chance to beat him. Lester gave up a run in the 2nd when former Sox Jose Iglesias hit an RBI double and everything seemed hopeless at that point. Lester hunkered down though and looked more and more dominant as the innings went by. In the 5th the Sox offense was finally able to break through against Scherzer. Drew hit a ground rule double and then when Ross struck out for the 2nd out, it was up to Will MIddlebrooks to get it done. Middlebrooks did just that and hit a 2 run RBI single up the middle to miraculously give the Sox the lead. Sox 2-1. Lester pitched 7 strong innings and was done for the night. His pitching line for the night was 11 pitches, 7 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 BB and 9 Ks.
Workman came out in the 8th and had one job to do, get Miguel Cabrera out. Breslow came out to get Prince Fielder out and then when he gave up a single to VMart it was Tazawa's turn in the inning. Tazawa got Infante to strike out to finish off the inning. In the top of the 9th the Sox were able to load the bases, but were unable to score. Fortunately, Koji Uehara came and had a simple, easy 9 pitch inning for the win.
Red Sox 2 Tigers 1 BOXSCORE
WP: Lester (13-8) LP: Scherzer (19-2) SV: Uehara (17)
