The Red Sox took on the Tigers in the final game of the series and had Ryan Dempster on the mound vs. Rick Porcello. The game would be back and forth in the early innings, but after the Sox offense broke out, Ryan Dempster would not suffer from a lack of run support on his way to his 8th win of the season.
The Sox offense got on the board in the 2nd inning when Stephen Drew hit a 2 run HR. The Tigers responded in the top of the 3rd though. Dempster gave up a sac grounder to Torii Hunter and then gave up a 2 run HR to Prince Fielder. Sox 2-3. The Sox tied up the game in the bottom of the inning when Ellsbury hit a solo HR. The Tigers once again responded in the 4th when Iglesias grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to give them the lead. David Ortiz hit a solo HR in the bottom of the inning to once again tie the game. Sox 4-4. In the 5th, the Sox took the lead once again when Pedey hit an RBI sac fly. Sox 5-4.
The Red Sox offense decided to stop with this seesaw action in the 6th inning when they batted around and scored 8 runs in the inning. With the bases loaded, Porcello walked Carp to bring in a run. Porcello was done for the night and Alburquerque was in the game. That would be an unwise decision for the Tigers. Will Middlebrooks came to the plate and hit a no doubt of a grand slam. Papi then hit his 2000th career hit for an RBI double and then Nava ended the inning by hitting a 2 run HR. Sox 13-5. Ryan Dempster had to be feeling mighty fine with this level of run support. Dempster was done for the night having pitched 6 innings and while he allowed 4 runs, he consistently battled to keep the team in the game.
Workman pitched a scoreless 7th inning and in the bottom of the inning the Sox offense continued to beat up on the Tigers pitching. Ryan Lavarnway hit a 2 run HR, Quinten Berry hit an RBI single and then David Ortiz knocked another HR to have the Sox leading 18-4. Franklin Morales pitched a scoreless 8th inning and then the Sox offense scored a couple more runs in the bottom of the inning. Mike Napoli felt left out of the HR Derby, so he hit a solo shot and then Berry hit another RBI single to finish off the offensive barrage. Sox 20-4. Rubby De La Rosa pitched a scoreless 9th inning and the Sox won a game with the most runs they have scored in a decade.
