The Red Sox came into the game with an 8.5 lead in the standings and were hoping to push it to 9.5. The Sox had Ryan Dempster on the mound vs. Alex Cobb for the Rays. Dempster struggled, but ended up leaving the mound with the lead, however the Rays would tie the game in the late innings. Mike Carp was the hero hitting a grand slam in the 10th and the Sox coasted to another victory over the Rays.
In the top of the 3rd the Sox bats got on the scoreboard first when Mike Napoli hit a 2 run RBI double and then Nava hit an RBI groundout. Sox 3-0. The Rays got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when DeJesus hit an RBI double. Sox 3-1. Dempster had the bases loaded in the inning and it looked like the Rays were looking for more, but Stephen Drew made a sick play at short to get him out of the inning with no more damage. Dempster was only able to pitch 5 innings and almost didn't get out of the inning, but left with the team clinging to a 3-1 lead.
Franklin Morales came out and pitched a scoreless 6th inning before handing the ball over to Brandon Workman. Workman gave up an RBI double to Longoria in the 7th to have the Sox clinging to a 3-2 lead. In the 8th, Workman gave up the tying run when he gave up a solo HR to James Loney. Sox 3-3. Koji Uehara came out and pitched a scoreless 9th inning, once again not allowing a baserunning. Koji now has the club record retiring 34 batters in a row. The game was now headed to extras, but it wouldn't be for long. In the top of the 10th the Sox had the bases loaded with one out when Mike Carp came to the plate to pinch hit. Carp hit the first ball he saw and hit it into the stands for a grand slam. Sox 7-3. Tazawa came out in the bottom of the 10th and got the 3 outs the team needed to notch down the win.
