Papi Hits a Grand Slam and Sox Walk Off in Game 2!

The Red Sox came into last night's game in a 0-1 hole and had to face Max Scherzer from the Tigers.  With Clay Buchholz on the mound it at least had the chance of being another pitchers' duel.  Unfortunately only Scherzer held up his side of that agreement.  The Sox risked being no hit again, but once they got Scherzer out of the game they were able to make a rally on thier way to a win.

Clay Buchholz didn't look his best last night.  He had some strong innings, but he was way too up in the zone during the outing.  Buchholz gave up his first run in the 2nd when he gave up an RBI single to Avila.  Sox 0-1.  Buchholz setlled down and kept the game 0-1 until the 6th inning when it seemed like the Tigers blew the game wide open.  Clay gave up a solo HR to Cabrera to have the Sox down 0-2.  VMart then hit an RBI double and it was followed by a 2 run HR from Avila.  Sox 0-5.  All hope seemed lost at this point and it seemed like we were headed to Detroit down 0-2.  Buchholz was done for the night and Brandon Workman was in to finish the inning.  Workman got the out he needed and the Sox were out of the inning.

All the while that the Tigers were knocking Buchholz around, Max Scherzer was following Sanchez's lead from Game 1 and still throwing a no hitter going into the 6th inning.  Luckily, the Sox bats wouldn't wait until the 9th inning to break it up.  Shane Victorino got the first hit of the game in the 6th and then Pedey hit an RBI double to bring him home.  The Sox were on the board.  Sox 1-5.  Workman was back on the mound in the 7th and got 2 outs before handing the ball over to Felix Doubront who got Fielder out to end the inning.  Doubront came back out and pitched himself a scoreless 8th inning.  Last night it seemed the experiment of Doubront out of the bullpen was a success.

Max Scherzer was done after 7 innings and the Sox offense could not be happier.  Middlebrooks hit a double, Ellbury walked and then Pedey hit a single to load the bases with 2 outs.  Leyland put his 4th pitcher of the inning in the game with closer Benoit.  The only problem for the Tigers is that he had to face David Ortiz, the most clutch hitter in Sox history.  Papi did what probably only he can do and hit a grand slam into the Sox bullpen to tie the game.  Wowza.  With new life, Koji Uehara was in the game to pitch the 9th inning.  As per usual, Koji has a 1-2-3 inning and the game headed to the bottom of the 9th.  The Sox had all the momentum at this point and hoped to continue their Walk Off City trend.  Gomes reached by way of an infield single, went to 2nd on a throwing error by Iglesias, then made it to 3rd on a wild pitch.  Salty was at the plate with no outs and the winning run at 3rd base.  Salty hit an RBI single and the Sox were off to celebrating their walk off win!
