The Red Sox and the Cardinals came into this game with the series tied 2-2. It was a rematch of Game 1 with ace against ace, Lester vs. Wainright. Lester picked right up where he left off in Game 1 pitching deep into the game and leaving the mound in line for his 2nd win of the World Series.
The Sox offense got a small lead in the 1st before Lester even took the mound. Pedey hit a double and then Papi continued to just hit, hit, hit with an RBI double to plate Pedey. Sox 1-0. Lester came out of the gate once again dealing. He seemed to have the Cards number. The only mistake he made was in the 4th inning when he gave up a solo HR to Matt Holliday to allow the Cards to tie the game. Sox 1-1. Both Wainright and Lester kept the score tied 1-1 in this pitchers duel until the 7th inning when the Sox bats finally got going again. Xander Bogaerts hit a leadoff single, Stephen Drew walked and then David Ross hit a ground rule double to plate Bogaerts. The Sox got another run when Ellsbury hit an RBI single to score Drew. Ross tried to get home, but he was thrown out by a great throw and tag by Molina. Sox 3-1. Lester pitched a scoreless 7th inning and then came back out in the 8th. Lester got 2 outs and then Koji Uehara was in the game for a 4 out save. Lester's combined ERA for both of his starts in the World Series is 0.59. That's just ridiculously awesome. Koji was his usual self and got the final out of the 8th and then all 3 outs in the 9 in order. Koji got his 2nd save of the World Series and gave his team a 3-2 lead heading back to Fenway Park.
Red Sox 3 Cardinals 1 BOXSCORE Sox lead Series 3-2.
