The Red Sox were just swept by the Brewers and hoped having John Lackey on the mound would be just what they would need to get their first win at Fenway in 2014. Lackey continued his stellar pitching and the bats were able to keep the home team in front on the scoreboard last night.
The Red Sox got their first run in 2nd inning when Jackie Bradley Jr hit an RBI single to score Bogaerts. Sox 1-0. The Rangers were able to tie up the game in 4th when Moreland hit a sac fly to score old friend Adrian Beltre. Sox 1-1. The Sox got the lead right back in the bottom of the 4th when Jackie Bradley Jr hit another RBI single. Sox 2-1. Bradley went 3 for 4 on the night and had two RBIs. AJ Pierzynski also had his first really impressive night at the plate going 3 for 4 himself.
The game remained 2-1 for much of the night. Lackey kept putting up zeroes on the scoreboard and just dominating the Rangers lineup. He pitched 7 strong innings and the only run which scored against him was an unearned one. His pitching line for the night was 95 pitches, 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB and 5 Ks. Lackey ERA so far this season is a 1.38. Not too shabby. Chris Capuano came out and pitched a scoreless 8th inning and then the Sox bats got back to work in the bottom of the inning. Jackie Bradley Jr hit an infield single and then Pierzynski ended up scoring on a throwing error from Prince Fielder. Sox 3-1. Nava hit an RBI single to score Herrera and then Pedroia hit into an RBI sac grounder to score Bradley Jr. Sox 5-1. The game was no longer a save situation, but Uehara was still in the game to close out the 9th. Koji allowed a single and a double, but didn’t allow any runs to score and the Sox won their first game at what finally felt like friendly Fenway. High Fives all around.
