Red Sox Win in a Bizarre Awesome Walk Off!

The Red Sox came into this game hoping to take the lead in the series against the Orioles.  The Sox had Jake Peavy on the mound vs. Ubaldo Jimenez for the O’s.  Peavy struggled out of the gate allowing 3 runs to score in the first.  The Sox would end up coming back to win the game in walk off fashion in the 9th inning much thanks to the poor defense from the O’s.

Peavy gave up a solo HR in the 1st to Nelson Cruz who continues to just pummel Sox pitching.  Peavy also gave up an RBI single to Wieters and a sac fly to Hardy.  Sox 0-3.  Peavy kept the score 0-3 until the 5th inning when he gave up an RBI ground rule double to Lough.  Sox 0-4.  Peavy gave up his final run of the outing in the 6th inning with an RBI single to Jones.  Peavy was done for the night on what is probably he’s poorest start of the season, however it didn’t help that he didn’t get a lick of run support either.  Peavy’s pitching line for the night was 102 pitches, 5.2 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 4 BB and 5 Ks.

Chris Capuano was in the game and finished off the 6th inning without allowing any more damage to the scoreboard.  The Sox bats finally came to life in the bottom of the inning when Jonny Gomes came to the plate and smacked a 3 run HR out of the park.  Sox 3-5.  Capuano came back and pitched a scoreless 7th inning and then let the Sox keep on working the O’s pitching in the later innings.   Papi hit an RBI single to have the Sox within a run.  Nap then came to the plate and hit an RBI groundout to score Sizemore to tie the game.  Sox 5-5.  Gomes wasn’t able to get the lead with the bases loaded with one out and then Nava struck out, but the Red Sox definitely had the momentum.

Farrell pieced together the 8th inning with Capuano with one out, Tazawa with one out and then Miller for the final out.  Miller came back for the 9th inning and gave up a leadoff double to Adam Jones.  Wieters was able to get Jones over to 3rd base with one out, but thankfully the O’s were unable to get him home.  Lombardozzi grounded out to Miller and he was able to keep Jones at 3rd.  At this point Farrell thought that the O’s were gonna pinch hit Delmon Young so he called for Edward Mujica.  Since Young hadn’t officially been announced yet, Showalter changed his mind and didn’t use it.  Thankfully Mujica was able to get Lough to strikeout to save Farrell from his own error.  The Sox headed to the bottom of the 9th and Pedey hit a ball that looked like it was a HR, but a bonehead fan touched the ball and it was recorded a double.  It was reviewed, but the video was inconclusive so Pedey remained at 2nd base.  Pedey got to 3rd on a wild pitch, Papi was walked and Napoli was plunked on the knee to load the bases.  Mike Carp came up to pinch hit and he hit a fly out to Lough.  Pedey ran to tag up and then O’Day lost the ball behind home plate and Pedey was able to easily cross the plate with a walk off win!

Red Sox 6  Orioles 5  BOXSCORE

WP: Mujica (1-1) LP: Matusz(1-1)
