Sox Lose in Extras to A’s

The Red Sox had John Lackey on the mound and a chance to sweep the A’s and finally be back to 500.  Lackey pitched well, but the Sox bats weren’t able to show him any love and the Sox fell in the 10th inning in a game that was very winnable.

The A’s grabbed a run in the 1st inning when Donaldson walked and then scored on an RBI single from Moss.  Sox 0-1.  The game stayed there until the 5th inning when the Sox tied the game with an RBI double from Sizemore.  Sox 1-1.  The Sox had a chance to take the lead in the inning, but were unable to get the players to the plate as Jackie Bradley Jr hit a bunt into a double play to end the inning.  The A’s grabbed the lead right back in the 6th when Lackey gave up an RBI double to Cespedes.  Sox 1-2.  Lackey was done after the inning and his pitching line was 107 pitches, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB and 4 Ks.

Andrew Miller came out and pitched a crisp scoreless inning and then the Sox tied the game in the bottom of the innings when AJ Pierzynski hit a HR to right.  Sox 2-2.  Junichi Tazawa came to the mound in the 8th and had a nice scoreless rebound inning after his recent struggles.  Koji Uehara pitched the 9th inning and while he seemed to struggle, he was able to pitch himself a scoreless inning as well.  The Sox were unable to score in the bottom of the inning and the game headed to extra innings.  Chris Capuano took the mound in the 10th and wasn’t able to have a rebound inning.  With 2 outs, Cap gave up a double to Lowrie, they IBB Donaldson and then Capuano walked Callapso.  The bases were loaded and Farrell went with Burke Badenhop.  Badenhop got the ground ball he needed, but it was hit in the perfect spot and Middlebrooks wasn’t able to get  it to 1st base in time and the run scored. Sox 2-3.  The Sox looked primed in the bottom of the inning to tie the game or better with Middlebrooks at 2nd base and no outs, but Middlebrooks got thrown out at 3rd.  The Sox would not be able to rally and fell in extras.
