The Red Sox were able to get a win against the Reds last night, but it took until 12 innings to get it done. The Sox started the game with Felix Doubront on the mound vs. the Reds’ Homer Bailey. Doubront only allowed one run, but wasn’t efficient and was out of the game pretty early on. With this win, the Sox are once again one game under 500 and looking to get to that benchmark and beyond tomorrow.
The Sox grabbed a run early in the game when Napoli hit a sac groundout in the 1st inning to score Pedey from 3rd. The Reds tied the game in the top of the 2nd when Dubi gave up an RBI single to Schumaker. Sox 1-1. In the bottom of the 3rd the Sox bats got back to work and got the lead back. Bailey was a little wild and ended up walking Napoli with the bases loaded to walk a run in. Grady Sizemore followed that with an RBI single to have the Sox leading 3-1. Doubront was able to hold this lead and pitched into the 6th inning. Doubront didn’t have a poor outing, but got back into his old bad habit of being very inefficient on the mound. Doubront walked two batters in the 6th inning and Farrell went out to get him. His pitching line for the night was 97 pitches, 5.1 IP, 1 R, 3 BB and 3 Ks.
Burke Badenhop came into the game and with one pitch got a double play ball to end the inning. Badenhop pitched a scoreless 7th inning before handing the ball over to Junichi Tazawa in the 8th inning. Taz continued to struggles as of late and allowed the game to be tied. Tazawa gave up an RBI single to Frazier and then an RBI sac fly to Ludwick. Sox 3-3. Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless 9th, however he did give a very long out that looked like a homer off the bat. Luckily, Shane Victorino was able to catch it at the edge of the warning track and the Sox still had life. The Sox bats were unable to score in the bottom of the inning and they were heading on to extra innings. Andrew Miller took the mound and pitched two crisp scoreless innings. Miller has emerged as one of the most reliable arms in the bullpen in 2014. Craig Breslow took the mound in the 12th and also pitched a scoreless inning. The Sox bats had been silent since the 3rd inning, but they woke back up in the bottom of the 12th. Papi started the inning off with a single through the shift, Napoli hit a single to get Papi to 2nd and then Grady Sizemore was the hero and hit the game winning single to bring Papi to the plate. It took a few extra innings, but the Sox were celebrating the walk off win.
