The Red Sox lost a game 0-1 the night before and tonight they would suffer from not only a poor offensive showing, but also a poor start from John Lackey. The Sox went down early and were never able to crawl out of the hole they put themselves in.
The Tigers got out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Lackey ended up with the bases loaded and no outs. The run was scored when Avila hit an RBI groundout, however the damage could have been so much worse. The Tigers grabbed a 2nd run in the 3rd inning when Miguel Cabrera hit a solo HR to the Pesky Pole. Sox 0-2. Lackey gave up 2 more runs in the 5th inning when Torii Hunter hit an RBI double followed by Miggy hitting an RBI single. Sox 0-4. The Sox finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5th when Xander Bogaerts hit a solo HR to the Monster. Sox 1-4. Unfortunately Lackey gave that run right back in the top of the 6th when Davis hit an RBI double to score Avila. Lackey was done for the night and Edward Mujica was in the game to finish the inning. Mujica made a few perplexing throws to 2nd base to try to keep Davis there and one of those throws was off the mark and Davis trotted to 3rd base. Kinsler hit a sac fly to bring Davis home and the Sox were down 1-6.
Chris Capuano took over in the 7th and pitched two scoreless innings. Koji Uehara took the mound in the 9th because I can assume that he needs the work since he hasn’t pitched in a few days. The Sox were unable to chase Porcello from the game and he pitched 8 strong before handing the ball over to Phil Coke in the 9th. Coke struggled a tad, but he was still able to pitch a scoreless inning and hand the Sox a loss.
Red Sox 1 Tigers 6 BOXSCORE
WP: Porcello (7-1) LP: Lackey (5-3)
