The Red Sox were riding a 7 game win streak and were hoping to bring it to 8. The Sox had John Lackey on the mound vs. former Sox Justin Masterson. The Sox wasted a chance against Masty in the first inning and never got another opportunity on their way to their first loss in over a week.
John Lackey had some control issues in the first inning and those walks turned into runs. Lackey walked Bourn and Brantley and then gave up a 2 RBI single to Chisenhall to have the Indians up 2-0. In the 3rd the Indians grabbed their 3rd and final run when Cabrera hit an RBI single to score Bourn. Sox 0-3. All the while Justin Masterson was just dealing against his former team. Masterson pitched 7 strong innings and left the mound in line for the win.
Once Masterson was out of the game the Sox were finally able to get on the scoreboard, but it was too little too late. Xander Bogaerts hit a 2 run HR to have the Sox within a run. John Lackey was still all the mound in the 8th and while he would end up getting the loss, he pitched a pretty solid performance. Lackey’s pitching line for the night was 96 pitches, 8 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 BB and 3 Ks. The Sox were unable to get the tying or go ahead run against the Indians closer Cody Allen and had their 7 game win streak snapped.
