The Red Sox had one win against the Twins in this series and were going for two last night with Jon Lester on the mound. Lester struggled through the 1st inning, but then looked like the ace we know and love. Lester was able to keep the Twins off the scoreboard just enough to have the Sox win another low scoring game. Brock Holt also made his first start in CF and made an absolutely stunning catch when Gomes lost the ball in left field. Basically, there is nothing Brock Holt cannot do.
With the way Jon Lester started the game, it looked like it was going to be a long night for the Sox. Lester didn’t allow any runs in the 1st inning, but he had to throw 33 pitches to get through it. On a hot, humid night, that didn’t look good. The Sox bats were able to get Lester a sole run when Holt hit a leadoff single and then Pedey hit an RBI double to bring him home. Sox 1-0. Lester seemed to settle in after his shaky 1st inning and retired the next 10 batters in order.
The play of the game was in the top of the 3rd inning when Dozier hit a ball towards left field. Gomes lost where the ball was and it looked like a disaster in the making, but out of no where Brock Holt came flying in and made the catch. I am convinced now more than ever that there is nothing Brock Holt cannot do. Below is a video of the great play courtesy of MLB.
[mlbvideo id=”33800329″ width=”400″ height=”254″ /]The Red Sox were able to get their 2nd run in the bottom of the inning when Holt doubled, stole 3rd base and then got home by way of a sac fly from Xander Bogaerts. The only run that Lester allowed was in the 6th inning when Joe Mauer hit an RBI double to score Santana. Sox 2-1. Lester pitched into the 7th inning and did his job and then some. His pitching line was 109 pitches, 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB and 6 Ks. Burke Badenhop got the 2nd out of the inning and then Breslow was in to get the 3rd. Breslow issued a walk, but then got the 3rd out when he got Sam Fuld to fly out. Sox 2-1. Tazawa came out for the 8th and had a dominant 1-2-3 where he got all 3 batters to strike out swinging. Koji Uehara was not available last night as he had worked the past 3 nights, so Edward Mujica came out for the save situation. Mujica has struggled with Boston, so Red Sox Nation all collectively held their breath. Mujica looked the role of a closer though as he had a quick and easy 1-2-3 inning to get his 2nd save of the season.
